Why Airbrush Makeup Might Not Be Your Best Friend (And That’s Okay!)

Listen, I get it. We’ve all seen those mesmerizing Instagram videos of airbrush makeup, promising to make us look like we’ve got that effortless ‘no makeup makeup’ look for a big event. Sounds amazing, right? But let’s talk about the reality.

Over the years, I’ve had clients come to me with high hopes of airbrush makeup giving them that real-life ‘perfect filter’ effect, only to be met with disappointment post-airbrush. And honestly, I get it. Airbrush makeup isn’t the golden child of the beauty world that some make it out to be. Let’s break down the biggest misconceptions so you can make an informed decision before jumping on the airbrush bandwagon.

Misconception #1: Airbrush Makeup Works on Every Skin Type

The truth is, airbrush makeup is like that one-size-fits-all dress that only fits one specific body type. Airbrush makeup only comes in a few types, water based or alcohol based. Water-based is going to be great on dry skin but not ideal for lasting all day. Alcohol-based is going to be great for staying power, but feels like your skin needs a tall glass of water. If your skin is textured, dry, or prone to fine lines and wrinkles, airbrush can cling to those areas and emphasize what you were hoping to blur. Unlike traditional makeup, which can be buffed, blended, and customized, airbrush makeup sits on top of the skin in a thin layer—which, for some, can mean ‘hello, patchiness and dryness’!

Misconception #2: It’s Flawless in Every Lighting

Sure, airbrush makeup can look smooth in pictures and under controlled lighting, but in natural light? One minute you are taking selfies at the salon obsessed with the results–but step outside into daylight, and suddenly it’s a different story—like using a front-facing camera by accident.  I’ve had clients return saying, “I looked amazing in photos, but in person… not so much.” Since airbrush makeup is sprayed on in such a fine mist, it doesn’t always mesh well with the skin’s natural movement and texture. It can even make peach fuzz on the face more obvious, which is not desirable.

Misconception #3: It Lasts Forever and Withstands Anything

It’s not the invincible force some claim it to be. It holds up until humidity, sweat, or an emotional wedding toast enter the chat. If you have oily skin, it can separate. If you have dry skin, it can crack. If you sweat a lot, well, let’s just say your face might not stay as snatched as you hoped. Traditional makeup techniques, when done well, can last just as long (if not longer) with the right prep and setting products.

So, What’s the Alternative?

I’m a believer in customizing makeup to suit your skin, your event, and your comfort level. Traditional makeup application allows for blending, layering, and correction—meaning fewer surprises and more control over how your makeup wears throughout the day.

At the end of the day, it’s all about what makes YOU feel your best. If you’re set on airbrush, we can absolutely work together to make it work for you. But if you’re open to alternatives, I promise there are other techniques that can give you that dreamy, long-lasting glow—without the regret.

Makeup should enhance, not stress you out. And if I can help save you from an unexpected makeup meltdown, I consider my job well done!
